Introduction

Governments around the world have always paid attention towards increasing pollution and other environmental issues that may become the cause of harm to the society. Business organizations and industries have also enacted socially and enviornmentally responsbile stratgies to maintain and sustain their operations. In order to protect any country's environment from possibly harmful impacts of pollution, nations across the world have developed and imposed various legislations which may help them in regulating different kinds of pollutions and also diminish their ngative impacts. This research paper discusses the benefits and disadvantages to hospitality industry by increasing government legisltaions on pollution.

 

Government legislations on Pollution

The problem of pollution and environnemtal safety has gained the stautus of international issue and is addressed by the government different countries all over the world. For instance, China had adopted regulations in 1979 Environmental Protection Lawto keep its enviornment safe and clean (Alex, 2007). Europe has adopted National Emission Ceilings Directive and International Pollution Prevention Control in 1996 for the protection of environemnt from harmful elements. Unitred States hads also passed various legisltaions to mitigate pollution which include the Noise Control Act (1972), Clean Water Act 1972, Clean Air Act 1990, and many others. Switzerland has also imposed Environment Protecrion Act, Air Pollurion Control Ordinance and many other acts in place for the environmental protection (Percival, Robert, 1996).

 

Impacts on Hospitality Industry

It has been since 1960s that the hospitality industry followed environmental management practices. The sustainable development concept pioneered by United Nations has been the major focus of the practices of hoteliers since half a century ago. Currently, the hospitality  operations greatly focus upon the optimization of the operational efficiency which leads to cost savings primarily within the three capacities namely water, waste, and energy (Kevin, Ritu, 2016). Hotels consume energy for the purpose of cooking, lighting, managing the heating and cooling systems of the facility. Laws are formed on the conservation of energy and use the resources in a more economical manner (SBA, n.d.). Water is used in hotel bathrooms and for the purpose of cleaning, laundry and cooking. The traditional measures for water conservation  applied by the hoteliers  consist of linen and towel reuse, fixture retrofits,  and improvement in the plumbing system. Hotels generate waste through refurbishment and construction, usage of paper and other consumables, and through office equipment and appliances. The measures employed by the hoteliers include various strategies for the reduction, recycling of waste and reusing the material in order to minimize the hauling and processing costs (SBA, n.d.).   Impacts The implementation of pollution control regulations by the government on hospitality industry is likely to result in advantages and benefits for the hotels. Since hospitality customers prefer cleaner environment and good ambiance, the pollution regulations act will assist the hotel management to satisfy the customers in terms of environment (Canadian University Consortium, 1998). The improved indoor air and lighting quality is likely to have positive impacts on both guest and employees (SBA, n.d.).
