Individual Oral Presentation: Regulation of Chain Store’s Expansion
In every social operated function, regulations are crucial to promote justified practices. Since the development of globalization and modernization in societies, overall expansion in social practices has been a critical concern as different departments aim to expand their operations. But the rapid growth influences both advantages and disadvantages. One of the vital social sectors experiencing rapid development and notable expansion is retail and chain store trading. As a crucial global department, the growth of retailing in business presents structural merits and critical concerns, specifically about regulations and policies of operations. Since most retailers function based on a global perspective, different countries have distinct laws that govern business operations, thus the need for regulatory aspects. Therefore, my presentation will discuss whether chain stores should be regulated and offer suggestions on managing retail trading.
Though a most common analogy would be that chain stores are better than the traditional ways which seem to be more segmented and specialized, that’s not the case. Furthermore, operators of chain stores would argue how beneficial the development is based on the profitable aspects. However, the expansion of chain stores presents a critical social concern regarding their operational influences in business. According to Shannon (2014), retail stores as a modern development in business has influenced a shift from the conventional systems to a more dynamic and rapidly expanding trading structure. As a result, traditional business operations have drastically decreased as more aspects of chain stores get developed. As noted by Zhang and Wei (2015), chain store development came in the wake of the internationalization of markets, and foreign players dominate most global retailing businesses. Furthermore, we can note that the economic aspects of chain store markets resulting from globalization shield most operators from being regulated comprehensively. The result is often a negative impact on traditional traders and unjustified competition on small-scale markets that operate in a vastly regulated system (Shannon, 2014; Cho et al., 2014). Therefore, chain stores must be regulated, and their expansion controlled to enhance fair trading in local markets and global forums.
In my opinion, the management of the rapid expansion of chain stores in the global market should start at a local level by countries acknowledging the impact of the development towards traditional means of trade. Consequently, the retail business’s regional regulations should be decentralized to the local level and vital policies enacted to ensure that their operations are effectively controlled. I also think that states should give local and conventional trading a vantage point regarding the modern retailing system’s policies. Implementing guidelines th...
