Service: The most appropriate service approach for McDonald’s is production line approach which is essentially more than the steps that are required in assembling pizzas and hamburgers. The delivery of fast food is considered as a manufacturing process instead of as a service process (Willner, 2013). At McDonald’s, the orientation is towards the efficient production of results and not on the attendance of people. Other than the restaurant’s fiscal and marketing skills, the firm carefully controls the implementation of the central function of each McDonald’s outlet all over the world – the quick delivery of a high-quality, uniform mix of prepared foods within an environment of apparent order, cleanliness, as well as cheerful courtesy. At McDonald’s, the systematic substitution of equipment for personnel together with the carefully planned use and positioning of technology, allows it to not only attract, but also hold patronage in proportions no other fast food restaurant or food chain in the world has been able to duplicate. The French fryer at the restaurant allows cooking of the optimum amount of French fries at one time; storage space is specifically designed for a determined mix of premeasured and prepackaged products; and a wide-mouthed scoop is utilized in picking up the exact quantity of French fries for every order size.
Self-service: a lot of customers like self-service given that it places them in control. However, for other customers, the company has to convince the customers that self-service actually helps them (Eppinger, 2011). At McDonald’s, the restaurant can enhance the service process by having the customers take a greater role in the production of the service.
