Management Practices worth Emulating (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

The Team Portfolio is a list of lessons learned or 'management practices worth emulating' as identified in the study of the book: NUTS! Southwest Airlines Crazy Recipe for Success. Southwest Airlines is truly a great case study of management and leadership. You will find the book to be both interesting and inspiring.
A professionally typed journal (style of your choosing) that identifies specific lessons or management/leadership practices that you have identified and found noteworthy.You may use a "bullet-point" format to identify the lessons. At the very least, make sure the reader (yours truly) does not have to search for your main ideas or lessons. It is perfectly appropriate to include a narrative (when necessary or helpful) to explain your "lesson" or to frame the response for better understanding.
This is not a research paper. This is a journal that is to reflect thought and discussion. No footnoting and bibliography is required or expected. DO NOT copy and paste responses explaining your "lessons". If you can't put your thoughts in your own words...don't put them in the journal. NO copying and pasting
What are the course "themes" that we are to consider when looking for lessons or examples of exemplary management practices?
Motivation
* Leadership
* Decision-making
* Group dynamics and teamwork
* Power and politics in Organizations
* Ethics and integrity
* Communication
* Management of Change
* Creation and management of organization culture
* Managing one's self and one's time
So...built around these "themes" (in no particular order)...identify specific examples and/or lessons that you have identified in the reading of the Southwest Airlines book.

When the airline begun operations in 1971, it had only four planes operating in three cities, and sales of just $2 million. However, by 1995, the company had grown to having 224 plans operating in 45 cities and revenues of close to $3 billion. The secret to this success lays in the innovative leadership style of Herb Kelleher, who undertook the decision to lower air fares and increase flights to realize sales.
Motivation
Unlike other airlines, the book depicts Southwest as being employee-focused, as opposed to the traditional focus on customers. In this regard, Southwest believes that customers come second, and that their employees are their greatest assets.
Power and Politics
Unlike other companies, Southwest is portrayed in manner that suggests inclusiveness and the decentralization of power. Even the least of all employees is accorded some decision-making capacity in the company.
Creation and Management of Organizational Culture
The philosophy of Southwest as shown in the book revolves around the idea of love, fun, and a warrior spirit. This is shown in the fact that the company discourages terminal professionalism, encourages a laid-back attitude in employees, and paints its airplanes as giant killer whales to inspire a warrior spirit.
