Challenges faced by Shelby Givens during Phase 1 i.e. the preparation for transformation were that she had to spend time in analyzing nationwide market and consumer trends related to bowling and evening entertainment, she also faced difficulty in coming up with the design in that she had nowhere to raise that amount which described as being below the market rate, Shelby lack enough funds for employing offsite caterers the amount required for this was equivalent to the amount that can be used for a full restaurant kitchen installation, there was no enough funds to build and run a full service restaurant facility in the existing space. There was also lack of licensed architecture to review design and architectural plans at the start.
In phase 2, Shelby experience the problem of grand opening date due to the un accomplishment of renovation on time which was caused by missed deadline for permit filling, delivery of incorrect materials and shortage in the building materials. Another challenge was how to terminate the loyal workers who have been working in the company for longer period of time since the time of her grandfather. In the phase 3, Shelby faced challenges when the machine for the two lanes failed to operate when Gary Scalped was away on vacation and cost a lot for her to arrange for its preparation, she also experienced loses during the start of its operation. This occurred in some days of the week where she only spent $ 40 per person which was less than the expected value.
In solving the challenge faced in market and customers analysis, she sought out an operational mentor, Michael Burke a manger of High Rollers to provide her with a generous share of inside business information. In the design, she got a boost from students who were willing to for three summer months at no cost in return for academic credit. She also hired a licensed architect who had a task of reviewing the design and architectural plans and ensures that they were in line with current safety and building codes. She also partnered with Raleigh food caterer with an offsite facility that could prepare tapas-style appetizers and small plates in order to address the challenge in hiring offsite caterers. After being met with the delays in opening the business at the right time she hired general manger that immediately started tackling her to do list. To address the problem of loss during the start of operation where she only spent $ 40 per person, she diverted to the use of Q3 funds to help solve the problem.
The most successful action in addressing the challenges was hiring of the general manager who had experience in the operation especially in the management of caterers and restaurant operation. The least was the diversion to Q3 strategy to address the loss that was experienced in first day of operation. Given could have also engaged in business partnership with the High Rollers who were already successful in their operation.
Sugar Bowl is a viable business because there is a future in it even though there are challenges that have been experienced in the start of its operation. The positive forces are being a financially stable entrepreneur, having the set targets, working towards the set targets, being a risk taker and endurance despite the challenges being faced. The negative forces are being too ambitious and listening to the wrong advices of the business failures.
The number of breakeven number of customers required Q3, 2011 are 1008/7 and this will give a total 144 while the breakeven number of customers required at the end of Q1 2012 are 1890/7 which is 270.
Exclusive brands will generate low income as compared to league bowling
League bowling is the best path on Wednesday night entertainment because the Zulu show was and it was taking place twice monthly and lasted for a few hours. This only attracted $1,500 per night. According to Petty, she also estimated that based on based on their past admission revenues, fans would pay $ 10 to hear Zulu and order 2.5 drinks. She saw that the Zulu fans will become frequent customers hence league bowling is the best path.
Success of an organization cannot be measured in terms of revenue that it generates therefore despite how plenty of the amount that Sugar Bowl may generate, Shelby should not consider herself successful. She should consider her business as being successful is she receives large number of customers and being recognized by both locals members and in the national level. She should be able to receive some awards from the government and stakeholders so as to be sure that her business is of great success.
I think Shelby should be more focus on the number of customers that come for the products that are produced within the organization.
In evaluation of the proposal that was made by the investor in buying her business, Shelby should first look at the goals which were set before the start of the Sugar Bowl. She has to be sure whether these objectives will be attained or not and to calculate the probability that these objectives will be attainable or not. She should calculate and compare the amount revenue that comes daily, weekly, monthly and yearly before accepting the offer from the investor. If there are no chances of getting such amount of money offered then she has to accept the offer. Another thing that she should consider is the stability of Sugar Bowl in terms of customers and capital that is generated to run the business. If the customers are enough and capital is there for the continuous then there is no possibility of accepting the offer. She should also look what the business might bring in the future in terms of profits and losses. In terms of personalization, Shelby has a number of relatives and customers who knows the origin of the business which she is running. Therefore, a lot of considerations must be put in place before accepting this offer from the investor. If she does not have love for her business, this can automatically influence to accept the offer. The business has survived since the start even though there has been draw backs in the operation and this should encourage Shelby to be more focus in this business that to leave it...
