Mcllhenny Company operates the manufacture of Tabasco brand pepper sauce (Slater, 2014). It is one of the world’s famous pepper sauces that have continued to maintain its market position and a competitive advantage despite the existence of many competitors such as Sriracha Hot chili sauce in sauce industry. Edmund Mcllhenny founded Tabasco pepper sauce in 1868 in South Louisiana. Edmund uses the rare seeds known as Capsicum Frutescence to produce Tabasco pepper sauce eventually. The sauce gradually became popular within his community, and he ventured into the field of hot sauce through marketing activities. He grew the first commercial pepper crop and sold over 600 bottles of Tabasco pepper sauce at the cost of one dollar per bottle (Tabasco, 2018). He patented the uniqueness and domain of Tabasco pepper in 1870, and it has since then remained to be made in the same way.
Tabasco pepper sauce has three main ingredients that make it simple and have a unique taste. These three ingredients include red pepper, distilled vinegar and salt and they contain zero calories hence satisfy the needs of customers as there is the trend for low fatty foods. The original Tabasco pepper sauce is packed in a 2-ounce bottle, and it contains almost 20 drops. Even though the competitors sell bigger bottles than the 2 oz bottle, Tabasco's 2oz bottle remains the company's trademark and remains the world’s favorite hot sauce. It is the 2oz bottle that is responsible for the company’s 40% of the annual sales (Tabasco, 2018). Tabasco pepper sauce is the leading hot sauce in the U.S with the market share of 23.2% and sells $100 million in retail annually.
