The Science of Business Administration Business & Marketing Essay (Essay Sample)
The task was to answer the question of whether business administration can be considered as science. In view of the discussions presented in the paper, it can be stated that Business Administration is in fact a science, albeit an inexact one. Although Business Administration is governed by time-tested scientific principles and theories of management, marketing, accounting, finance, operations, and management information systems, results may not necessarily be consistent as the processes involved are directly impacted by the subjective nature of human behavior, thus defying the predictable nature of science.

The Science of Business Administration
Science is based on the presence of a certain systematic body of knowledge. Unlike other forms of human endeavors such as art or literature, science evolves through the use of theories which must be proven. Scientific principles, which are formed on the basis of observation, experimentation, testing, and repetition, are recognized as valid and are thus accepted as universally applicable (Wali, Evrendilek & Fennessy, 2010 p.12). In this context, it should be noted that Business Administration is similarly a systematized body of knowledge which makes use of its own theories, concepts, and principles that have evolved over a period of time based on repeated experimentation and observation in different types of organizations. Despite its characteristics as a systematic body of knowledge, however, Business Administration can be considered as an inexact science when compared to other recognized forms or manifestations of science. Gravity, for example, is known to be universally applicable and, regardless of the location on earth, an apple will fall down to the ground because of gravity. In Business Administration, although the theories or principles which have been developed can be applicable to any organization, differences in human behaviors create uncertainties in the eventual outcome. The administration of businesses involves managers who may modify standardized principles and techniques as per the situation or problem being faced. It is difficult to precisely predict how a human being is going to behave or react in certain situations; therefore, although Business Administration utilizes proven theories and principles, the inclusion of subjective human behavior and its effect makes it an inexact science.
