Introduction
Human resources comprise of the various groups of people who work in an organization, business sector, or economy. In some instances, the term can be used interchangeably with ‘human capital”, however, human capital is a much narrow definition in that it means the knowledge that the individuals have and contribute to the economy, business sector or workforce.
The human resource department in any organization has the responsibility to oversee the human resources of any organization or business in order to realize the goals of the organization. The Human Resource department is very important for the well-being of any business regardless of its scale of operation. Other duties of the department include payroll, recruitment, firing employees, benefits, and updating the firm on matters of state tax laws (Guerin, 2007).
Professional dress code
All customers judge the organization from the way the employees look like, and the products and services they offer. By dressing correctly and having the correct look, the customers will reflect the company as being highly professional, and this will add a positive image of the company.
All of Zappos’s employees are expected to dress in the appropriate attire, various dresses are allowed here, and these vary from business to another. There are businesses where the law requires all employees to wear a special uniform.
All workers of Zappos’s who do not dress as per the expected standards will be counseled by their respective head of department. Generally, all employees are expected to meet some standard of dressing which will give them a perfect look.
Zappos’s dress code enhances the reputation of the firm. Since all the employees of this business and the management team dress appropriately, customers and clients see the employees as serious with work and this image promotes the good working of the company. It has been discovered that by dressing professionally the employees become more productive. The fact that there is a dress code for this organization means that when employees come to work they have to stay in work the whole day, and in a manner, that upholds common sense. The dress code boosts the spirit of employees, the fact that the employees of this organization dress professionally makes them have a great feeling about themselves, and this improves their pride and encourages them to carry out their work successfully. The dress code helps to attract more customers and clients. Many people do not take people who are dressed in an unprofessional way with seriousness and thus will make less business deals than expected. The unique professional dressing attracts more people to seek jobs in this organization. The new prospective employees will get it easier to conforming to the firm’s formalities now that they already know what the dress code is.
Equal Employment Opportunity policy
According to Baldini (2005), a company is entitled the role of providing equal opportunities for employment for all prospective job seekers regardless of their religion, job, sex, marital status, economic background, disability, nationality, and many other factors that distinguish people from others. This is in accordance with the existing labor laws.
A firm should be fully committed to extending all the decisions on employment, recruitment, promotions, benefits, privileges and others and should not tolerate any discrimination based on these grounds or any other not mentioned here (Folsom, 2004).
The organization attracts a big pool of qualified job seekers and thus it has the debility to hire highly qualified personnel to help it carry out the relevant tasks. The job seekers spread and send good message of the firm to other people, and this has profound effects out there. The confidence of getting equal treatment at work gives an opportunity for all employees to work to their best and realize the out of them.
Zappos has very little workplace conflicts, and this has resulted in the high volume of sales and expanded profits. The firm has embraced equal employment opportunities and enforced various guidelines that ensure there is equal treatment of the employees as they carry about their day-to-day operations at the workplace. The firm’s fair employment policies and ethics, which promote equal opportunities of employment to all employees, has reduced work related conflicts and increased the productivity of the employees largely. This organization gives all the employees the rules that govern all employees and the management while they work at the firm to promote harmony at the workplace.
Through fair processes of enumeration, there is little risk of mistreatment and manhandling of the junior employees by the senior ones, and thus there will be little reported case of mistreatment, the firm’s management focus their energies on production rather that solving conflicts and litigation, this has allowed the management good opportunities to make other important decisions for the firm.
Equal employment opportunity policies give an illustration of zappos’s commitment to be on the right side all the time. Since the employees are focused on doing the right things they are satisfied with their workplace, this explains why this firm has a low rate of employee turnover, which has created a pool of qualified manpower to carry out all the functions of the firm at all times. There are few chances of employees resigning from this firm or revolting against the good employment policies of the firm. Some experts have raised arguments that if a firm has employees with a good morale then there will be many investors seeking to invest their resources in the business.
The firm’s image is attractive in the industry due to its equal employment policies. Its policies distinguish it from other firms and the way it conducts its business is different from the way other employees carry out their business. The company is now focusing on corporate social responsibility rather than employee welfare.
Zero tolerance to workplace threats and violence
Kerr (2010) argues that the safety and security of all employees is incredibly significant for the triumph of the business, and that is why the firm takes all matters that threaten the well-being of their employees with a lot of seriousness. Threats, violent actions, or threatening behavior against visitors, guests, clients, employees or any other employees of the firm are highly discouraged, and anyone reported or found doing so should be dealt with according to the law.
The firm quickly does away with any person who shows threatening behavior or is involved in acts of violence within its property or jurisdiction; anyone violating this will be dealt with according to the law. A person reported doing so has to stay outside the premises until the investigations are complete. On the other end, the firm maintains harmony with others or within employees by taking the appropriate action against any person or firm, which threatens peace.
All employees of Zappos are fully responsible for notifying a supervisor of any threats that they have witnessed in the process of duty. Note that there are other threats to the stability and existence of the company itself that include noting acts of fraud in the company’s financial system and these will have to be reported immediately for the appropriate action to be taken. All employees of the firm have to be socially responsible while in the process of executing their duties in the firm. The firm is very safe to work in at all times because unity and peace among workers are highly encouraged at all times and these have made it unique from others. The firm has very disciplined employees who never take any threat lightly until and otherwise proved so. They also report third party threats and the firm acts quickly to ascertain if the threat is indeed realistic.
Employees work to their best because they have assurance of peace in the workplace. All threats are handled with a lot of care to prevent the victimization of peaceful employees by those with malicious intention. There may be a person seeking to ruin other people’s careers that is why the company follows the rule of law to ascertain the innocence or guilt of the parties involved. This policy has given all the employees an assurance of safety and job security while working with the organization.
The Open Door Policy
According to workday (2012) Zappos’s managenment adequately solves questions, complaints, and problems to prevent them from accumulating to unmanageable levels. By properly handling, the issues that arise from within the business and outside, all the customers and clients get full satisfaction from the firm thereby making them more profitable. Open door policy allows problems that arise within the business to be brought forward to the management and solved through a fair process to avoid recurrence. There are two types of conflicts: internal and external conflicts; internal conflicts occur between employees are easier to handle than external conflicts, which occur between the business and other businesses, people or the state.
Communication is a powerful tool that can determine the success or failure of any business if there is poor communication among workers there will be poor coordination of work...
