Often, when one moves from their everyday environment to a new one, they expose themselves to new experiences than what they are used to. In many instances, it comes with some uncertainty, anxiety, or confusion. This mixed feelings that one experiences are referred to as cultural shock. Though it is mostly common when one moves from one society to another that is different than theirs, it does not always have to be a change in geographical dimensions. According to Bednar (2018), one may experience cultural shock in their very neighborhood, as long as they get into an environment that presents different elements from what they are used. For instance, when on visits a mental hospital for the first time, the environment becomes completely new to them, and they develop mixed feelings. Ideally, culture shock arises from one being in an environment where they are not familiar with the behaviors, language, and local customs.
I had never been to a club before, and I felt it would be best to use it as a new setting, to see what people do there, and understand what it feels to be there. I was brought up in a modest family with virtually all teachings aligned to the ways of the Christ. Many times, we were taught that getting out in the night was not only unsafe but also an indication of bad morals. My mother would tell me constantly how immoral it was to get to clubs, and how unacceptable the things done in the clubs were. For this reason, I believed that moving from the beliefs and teachings of the church to a club setting presented a cultural change. I chose Cielo, one of the top-seven night clubs in New York City. Nightclubs are synonymous with partying, where many youths, and sometimes some grownups gather to have fun in the night. To have a full experience, I chose a Saturday night, when everyone is free and in the partying mood.
