Media ethics is a complex issue. This is because it involves carrying out activities that normal people living in normal circumstances would not do. Media ethics mostly deal with philosophical ideas that range from Judeo-Christian to the contemporary social-responsibility ethics that was proposed by Hutchins’s Commission.
The story by Kristen Hare titled In St. Louis, high school journalists are telling their own stories about Ferguson brings out numerous issues on media ethics. From the start of the story, it is apparent that the reporter is sensational. In the first paragraph, the author indicates that Jennifer Fowler was ‘scared’ as she watched the news as sit emerged from Ferguson. However, there is nowhere in the story where an attempt is made to explain why Fowler was scared thus creating the impression that everyone knew the reason, but this was not the case.
Apart from this, the story by Hare is clearly lacking in content. The article has jumbled up numerous ideas that make it hard to understand the idea that she is trying to communicate to her audience. While at first she tries to create the image of someone who is scared by what was happening, the image created in the rest of the story is one of students who were eager to get to their normal school routine.
