Question 1
The job advertisement in question was accessed online from the UK Law Society Gazette website, and Wills and Legal Services Ltd, a specialist paralegal services company, made it. The Company is looking for an in-house Company solicitor, who will be tasked with drafting and executing wills and trusts, Lasting Power of Attorney’s and probate. The ideal candidate will also be mandated to enhance relations with the clients. Additional experience in Conveyancing would give the candidate a competitive edge over the others. In as much as this advertisement does not have complex details, it however, interested me so much, because first, the job requires someone, who can deal with elderly people. I would be excited to find out what kinds of skills are required for that kind of lawyer. Secondly, the specifications of this job also indicated that, once hired, the solicitor would have the liberty to work at home since the working hours are so flexible. This also is a novel requirement that prompts me to think about the best way possible of sieving candidates using this requirement. This being an ongoing opening, I found it plausible to make it subject to this discussion.
Question 2
Employee selection is a process in which, when hiring, a company uses specific instruments to choose the ideal candidate from a pool of applicants (Amos, 2008). This job advertisement does not present numerous explicit requirements from which I can set my criteria for hiring the best candidate. However, the nature of the advertised job calls for other specialized skills that candidates must possess if they are to be deemed fit for the job. Before we delve deeper into the specific qualities and criteria, it must be understood that there are several selection methods that would ideally be available considering the nature and requirements of this job.
I could start with sifting different applications. This will entail picking out only the well drafted CVs and Cover letters. Aside from the drafting, the details within the application documents must also be in tandem with the vision and mission of the institution, as well as being sensitive to the details of the job applied. Applicants, who satisfy this criterion, will then be subjected to a bio-data analysis in which I will make a biographical scrutiny of all the applicants (Mortensen, 2011). The details I will be looking for here include work experience, sex, gender, integrity records, leisure interests, and any pro-borno services that the candidate has provided before. From this stage, I can now conduct interviews to establish the personalities of the candidates, their interpersonal skills, charisma, and problem solving skills. The interviews will be adjudicated and presided over by a panel of experts in the field of legal practice (Kraszewski & Mcewen, 2010).
The above selection methods present the ideal criteria, which have to be used to get the best solicitor suitable for this job. I am inclined to adopt it fully with no alterations whatsoever. However, regarding a few additional special qualities, which are required of this solicitor; I will first stress on integrity. Even though I have mentioned it before, integrity will be a key factor in recruiting a person, who is mostly going to deal with drafting wills for the elderly and probate administration. In as much as these are fiduciary duties, it is also imperative that the candidate is a person, who will not take undue advantage of the compromised situations of their clients (Ekerman, 2006).
On top of integrity, I will also look out for the sociability of the candidates in question. Since the candidates are expected to deal with old people, who need to be treated with utmost delicacy, in the society, the solicitor in this position must be a charming and caring person. The person should not only execute his professional obligations excellently, but also goes ahead to understand the condition of the client and any extraneous circumstances that might be bothering them (Dowling, Festing, & Engle, 2008).
In addition, as a Human Resource Manager, I will be interested in knowing other commitments, be it of an employment nature or otherwise; that the candidate is engaged in. This is a part time and sometimes a work from home job. It will be good to know, who can work at the best convenience of the Company. This implies that the company cannot hire a person, who is engaged in so many activities, such that it would be difficult for him to carry out the tasks assigned.
Question 3
I believe that I have all the professional requirements that this job demands of me. Being a solicitor with over 7 years of experience in Probate Administration and drafting of Wills, Power of Attorneys’ and other testamentary documents, I am better placed to perform well if offered the job. My record of accomplishment speaks for itself. This is because I have represented notable estates within the country and the outcome has been in most cases favorable for my clients.
Nevertheless, putting aside the professional requirements of this job, there are specific qualities that I have to possess to fit within the setting of this job. This is because I am likely to deal with the elderly and sometimes children of the deceased on a personal basis. Therefore, I have learnt that I lack the requisite compassion and ability to care for such people even if this could only happen on a short-term basis. Because of this, I will need some training about the psychological disposition of such persons and the best ways in which I can make them have confidence in me and cooperate with me as I execute my professional duties. I also need to be a livelier person who can cheer them up when they are downtrodden and bring them back to the business path (Amos, 2008).
