Carter Meland's Stories for a Lost Child in its volume which is subtitled " Putting Out the Light ", is an anthology of prose fiction pieces organized to form one, cohesive narrative. The primary theme in this book seems to be that of identity; or more specifically, how the child protagonist, Fiona, develops her feelings about her independent self. If Fiona has not felt confident in her sense of self until she becomes an adolescent but even then she remains unsatisfied because she cannot figure out who it is that she wants to be and what kind of effects all these changes will have on her future relationships with family and friends.
