Consequences of Plagiarism
Plagiarism has profoundly increased in higher learning institutions, including universities and colleges. The broad range of potential materials available over the internet has significantly increased the students' pressure to plagiarize. Plagiarism, however, is a heinous act, which may trigger adverse consequences on students who fall victim to the offense. Although students have increased the temptation to cheat, plagiarism is a severe offense that leads to dire consequences, such as academic sanctions, negative students’ credibility, and a ruined academic career.
An academic sanction is the leading consequence of plagiarism. Every higher learning institution does not tolerate plagiarism and has placed strict measures to curb the menace. Since professors expect learners to study and achieve reasonable grades honestly, students are likely to incur academic consequences that could lower their scores, leading to an ultimate failure (Straková & Cimermanová, 2018). For instance, in addition to failing the course, instructors could dismiss students from their major subjects. It could also reduce students' opportunities of acquiring essential references from the professors for pursuing academic programs through internships and scholarships. Moreover, plagiarism allegations could prevent undergraduate students from joining taking postgraduate degrees. When a specific department discovers any element of plagiarism in a student’s dissertation or thesis, it could invalidate the degree of the affected student.
