We experience socialization (socially acceptable behavior) throughout our lives; however, the most important part of socialization is experienced during childhood. Several agents are responsible for a child’s socialization process: family, peers, school, and mass media. Family is critical in giving us a system of values, beliefs, and norms besides teaching us ways of caring for ourselves (Freeman, & Showel, 1953). Family is also important in providing an individual with the necessary skillset to partake in societal activities. Social, emotional, and physical growth is derived from a family, thus making parents the most important aspect of a child’s development. Parents are the “epicenter” in the life of a child; they imbibe the social requirements from a child through rewards and punishment step-by-step as the child grows.
