Hi, my name is Sam. I’m 19 years old, and I study nutrition in my local community college. I’ve only recently started having friends who appreciate and understand me. It wasn’t the same in high school, middle school or even in elementary school. People had always said that something was wrong with me, but I didn’t know what. Everything I did and everything I experienced was just me; I couldn’t understand where they were coming from. I felt alone and different.
I first realized what was wrong when I was nine, when I first caught a glimpse of what people were saying about me: that I feel and hear things that aren’t there. It didn’t make sense because, to me, these experiences were real. I thought that everyone was my enemy. Every smile, every whisper, and every move a stranger or a family member made was done with the sole intent of hurting me. Kids at school made fun of me; they said I had a split personality or bi-polar disorder, and that I was the bad guy from a horror movie. Hearing the mockery in their voices only made the void in me grow deeper and darker. It made the constant battle of the voices in my head louder. At the same time, it gave me a ray of hope that maybe everything bad about me and everything I was feeling could have a name that wasn’t mine.
