Barriers to Going to School Online
Technological advancements and innovations have stimulated various educational transformations across the United States (Linn, Davis, Bell & Linn, 2013). Among the technological developments is eLearning for baccalaureate nursing students, of which I am one of them. Though attached to a myriad of advantages, online schooling for my baccalaureate nursing has been coupled with several barriers and distractions.
Firstly, online schooling has inadequate online support. Some Learning Management Systems are always challenging to use. Most times, the online support staffs are unreachable when one needs additional help in navigating the eLearning course. Challenging eLearning materials frustrate online learners. They become even bored and disengaged, and they can end up giving up on the course. Secondly, online schooling creates flexibility for one to also study in their homes. However, such an environment has several distractions that may make one’s learning ineffective. For instance, one can be tempted to sleep when studying in bed. Similarly, studying on a comfortable couch and wearing pajamas can put one in a relaxed mood compared to if one was going to the traditional classroom setting. Additionally, online learners probably lack motivation in their day to day learning since no physical group work is possible as it would be if they were going for a physical class (Dumford & Miller, 2018, pp. 452-465).
