Problem
Private prisons experience a number of problems like abuse and mistreatment of prisoners. Private prisons are characterized by overcrowding, frequent whipping and malnourishment. The main objective of this article is address problems arising from private prison and their possible remedies.
Causes of problems in private prisons.
Many problems in private prisons are caused by under staffing, lack of adequate officers training, high number of employees and poor prison conditions experienced by inmates. Low saving cost for private prisons often results poor medical care and violations of the inmates civil rights. Inadequate medical care results to poor health condition of the inmates and may results to the death of the inmates. Due to profit incarceration, many private prisons decisions are not in the interest of the inmates or the surrounding community. Many private prison companies employ guards who are not qualified who employ excessive force, cruelty and violence to control inmates. The unqualified officers provide substandard services to inmates like improper medical care which results to unnecessary deaths.
Prison privatization contribute to fines, high federal oversight need, increased litigations and lawsuits at high cost to the government, taxpayers and communities. Female inmates in some private prisons often resort to committing suicide due to psychological torture after incidences such as rape and assault.
In many private prisons, there is reduced security and facilities for monitoring the inmates which results to occurrence of violence. Inmates often resort to riot and in some cases kill correctional officers and even take hostages. In attempt to maximize profit, the private prisons accommodate large number of prisons and results to overcrowding. Overcrowding of inmates in private prisons pose greater threat to inmate health and poor living conditions. In an event of a disease outbreak especially communicable disease, a larger number of inmates are at risk of being infected. Inmates are underfed and are concentrated in cells without proper working toilets and some are even invested with rats.
Problems experienced in many private prisons are as result of government lack of oversight and inability to establish adequate accountability. Private prisons have limited accountability and are mainly profit oriented hence they will do anything possible to earn their profit. Corruption in private prisons have been encouraged by lack of regulation by the government and limited transparency which enable private prisons to increase their revenues by engaging in forbidden practices. Inmates welfare in most private prisons are secondary objective and inmate are not provided by necessary facilities.
