In elementary school, the ability of child to develop fluency is based on their ability and that of the tutor to decode words. The RAVE-O program allows for this. The program enable the learner to understand words from different perspectives but same meaning. For instance, the program may use the word web to create a series of words that have similar sound or meaning. In the video, "Developing Fluencyâ€, the tutor uses the word bat to generate words such as nocturnal referring to the nature of the bat (Reading Rockets, 2014). This allows the child to understand words easily and allows them to decode the words. The program works since the learner understand words as related to another word or words.
From the video, I can borrow the use of the word web. In an argument by Gunning (2011) word patterns makes it easier for the learner to understand and correctly decode complex words. In this way, their fluency is developed. O’Connor (2014) also cites that word patterns in elementary school increase the interest of the leaner to acquire knowledge on new words.
