Educational scenarios Essay
Scenario 1: Hannah and Amelia
Student motivation and engagement are essential elements for the improved outcomes of learning for all students. Motivation is crucial for engagement of a student in the process of learning which results in achieving superior academic outcomes (Zyngier, 2008). Though students cannot always stay motivated, using extrinsic motivation techniques encourages and stimulates students' attitude towards learning (Krause, Bochner & Duchesne, 2006). This motivation is the number of efforts a student puts into the learning process to achieve successful academic outcomes. Motivation is critical for the success of a student and the school as the absence of motivation may result in student not taking a single effort towards learning (Sternberg 2005). A student has different types of motivations under different circumstances. Having a fair understanding of these various motivations puts a teacher into a better position and enables him to provide a more favourable learning environment (Marsh, 2000).
For Hannah the below two approaches would keep her focused in achieving her goals.
Encouragement: Hannah is a student who is very concerned about her performance. Hannah has relatively more desire for a teacher’s approval and positive reinforcement. Hannah has intrinsic motivation which makes her enthusiastic about learning and encourages her when the teacher acknowledges and merits her work. This entails acknowledging Hannah for her performance and encouraging her for more. Hannah behaviour indicates that she is actively looking for extrinsic motivation and it is driven by outer rewards or incentive. Hannah wants to deserve good grades and praises. Giving her what she believes she deserves will motivate Hannah tremendously (Filimonov, 2017).
