Abstract
A striking number of institutions presently encourage internationalization as a key strategy, signifying that the development of a “global citizenry” is an essential part of their educational mission. Today's graduates are seriously dependent on an interconnected world, and universities have the obligation to promote global mindedness to provide high employment opportunities for their graduates, and to react to political calls for enhanced national security. In this essay, one will have the understanding of the importance of global citizenship and the role it plays in the society. Finally, the essay will try to consider the relevance of people becoming global citizens at this generation. Given that being Global Citizen is hard, the essay will vaguely go through the problems that can be faced by Global Citizens from time to time.
Introduction
Every disaster in the world, every global problem be it hundreds of thousands of miles away, or right next door is considered a global issue. It will take a global effort with Global Citizens to stop the conflicts (Moon, 2011). What is needed in the world is social solidarity, and making people start acting like Global Citizens. This is the only way this act can be fulfilled. As humans, we have a duty to protect each other. This is why nations from all over the world come together when a disaster strikes for example how people came together to the disaster in Haiti. The only problem is that people only remember to unite when there is a groundbreaking disaster to take care off. It is time that people came together and found ways of improving the present before more people get to suffer.
Importance of Educating others on Global Citizenship
Universities and colleges conceivably have a responsibility to create international curricula that cater a student citizenry with tenacious global awareness, either as a repercussion of their educational mission, in feedback to political calls for enhanced national security, in providing high employment opportunities for their students, or supporting the public growing interest in the advantage of promoting global mindedness on the future generation. Responding to these realities as explained on the video will require a significant increase in the global education of the typical university graduate. The aggregation of and access to technology has created links between societies, institutions, individuals and cultures and for that today's college graduates live and work in the world that is more accommodating than ever before (Edwards & Gaventa, 2001).
While the availability of advanced travel and technology is not available to the entire world citizens, those who have the reach and acceptance of higher education institutions also have an excellent opportunity for globalized experience. The opportunity for a graduate to shape their existence within a global background can promote a deeper understanding of cultural differences and create a strike point for connecting their individual beliefs with those of others. Globalization and internationalization are essential components of the educational process. To live and picture upon the experiences a student has with these situations can increase action and bring about the transformation of viewpoint. Additionally, when people get educated on matters affecting Global Citizenship it will help; reduce the amount of possible wars among countries, establishing free trade between countries, propagation of democratic ideas, influencing environmental protection in developed countries, increases independence of national states and influence in global media (Edwards & Gaventa, 2001).
* Intergroup Empathy: Empathy has received growing factual attention the study of intergroup relations. Most of the analyses that have been conducted focus on the potential of interferences that generate empathy for improving intergroup attitudes and minimizing intergroup inclination.
* Valuing Diversity: Studies have shown that, diversity values personal differences and recognizes respect. Therefore, allowing people to boost their potential. It consist differences such as ethnicity, age, color, gender, language, race, religion, creed, and marital status, sexual orientation, thinking style, language and more.
* Social Justice: This is creating a just society through challenging injustice and valuing diversity. In most parts of the world, social justice takes place when all people share a common humanity and for that they have the right to equitable support for human rights, treatment, and a fair distribution of community resources. The conditions of social justice strictly forbid discrimination (Edwards & Gaventa, 2001).
* Environmental sustainability: As a Global Citizen, environmental sustainability helps one to make decisions and take actions that are insignificance of protecting the world. This is through preserving the capability of the environment to support humanity.
* Intergroup Helping: people are always happy to help those who belong to their class and group. Discrimination is one of the pressing problems affecting intergroup helping in the society. However, studies have shown that Global Citizenry has reduced this act because it gives people the opportunity to see things through other individual's perspective (Kruempelmann, 2002).
