Serious and violent incidents occur in district schools. Although the events are preventable, they cannot be erased entirely. However, it does not give a reason to give up as counties and districts can develop district-wide safety plans and oversee their implementation to decrease cases of violence in schools. In a district-wide safety plan, all district schools are considered, and the plan developed fits their needs and wants, and level of building. Thus, Muscogee County needs one of its safety plans that will make the county responsive to the health and emergency needs of school children.
Objective of the Paper
In school environments, a culture of safety is an assurance to the children about their social and academic success (Furlong et al., 2005). Social and academic success is important to the children and the country in general for they will grow up to become socially responsible and important members in the society. Second, development and implementation of a safety plan in Muscogee County will be a way through which the youth will feel valued, develop a sense of connectedness, and bear the responsibilities of proper behaviors and need for education (Furlong et al., 2005). Third, developing the plan will enhance collaboration between parents, schools and the community (Furlong et al., 2005). In meeting goals, collaboration will make Muscogee district county schools to run on an improved platform for school safety.
Importance of the plan to Stakeholders
Stakeholders in district schools include parents, the community and the district at large. Safety plans in schools are for school children who are the future of the community. Thus, such a plan has more than one benefit to district-wide school stakeholders. For example, a safety plan will make learners meet their best in their academic abilities (Sprague & Walker, 2005). The achievements will make the community believe that that it would not run out of skilled labor in the future. Through a safety plan, a strong and supportive social network will develop (Sprague & Walker, 2005). In the process, the community will foster good relationships and communication between itself, and the scenario will boost the well-being of the community.
Three Safety and Crisis Management Structures that can help select Critical Components for use in Plan
A crisis is bound to occur at any time. Thus, it is important to come up with safety and crisis management structures that can help Muscogee County to develop a safety use plan for its schools. Among the structures that can help select critical components for use in the plan includes resources that can promote a sound safety plan (Smith & Sandhu, 2004). Resources are an important aspect because they make sure that a plan in place is sufficient. Another structure is the existing mode of communication between schools and parents (Smith & Sandhu, 2004). In relation to the structure, addressing communication structures helps to determine components of the district-wide school safety plan. Cooperative relationships between schools and parents help to choose components for safety plans (Smith & Sandhu, 2004). Thus, plan developers should observe the character and practice caution in their implementation.
Assessment of Current District-Wide safety Standards and Plans
The current district-wide safety standards and plans include some areas that form part of the plan n its implementation. Among the standards that the plan has implemented include priorities for learning, graduation and equity culture and context (Rice, 2014). These aspects have some standards in them defined according to the district schools board and their observation is mandatory. On the other hand, if staff is not trained to carry out the plan, the plan will fail to meet its obligations. Thus, in the current plan and standards, the plan has proposed to schools to hire high-quality teachers that can make the plan a reality and make sure that children in schools are as safe as possible (Rice, 2014). Other safety standards in the current school-wide safety plan for Muscogee County include working standards and communication, transparency and accountability (Rice, 2014).
Best Practices
In the hope of introducing a district-wide safety plan and procedure in Muscogee County, there are some industry best practices that if adopted, the best possible plan will arise. Among the best practices include engaging in deliberative efforts that can promote a safe culture and environment in schools (Furlong et al., 2005). The positive environment created will work to reduce risks and conditions that foster an unsafe environment. Promotion of social and emotional learning is another best practice that can work for district-wide safety plans and oversee their successful implementation (Furlong et al., 2005). On the other hand, development of self-discipline is another best practice that promotes safety plans and ensures safety (Bear, 2010).
Individual School Plans
If developed, individual school plans can work to meet the standards of district-wide school safety plans. In the individual safety plans, zero tolerance to malpractices will work for individual plans because children will know how to behave and what not to do in certain situations (Bear, 2010). Other aspects included in an individual school plan include comprehensiveness of the plans, inclusion of curriculum activities that promote and enhance social, behavioral and emotional competencies (Furlong et al., 2005). The two will be effective in the plans and some of the aspects are a must-have in the plan. It is however important to note that for each plan to work effectively containing up-to-date information and what is necessary for a national framework is core.
