Is Obesity a Disease?
Many of us would disagree and find this idea absurd. However, the American Medical Association held an annual meeting and voted obesity as a disease. This has brought a lot of controversies and left people confused. Should we treat people who are obese as sick people? Do we buy them flowers and wish them a quick recovery? If obesity is a disease 78 million Americans are classified as sick. Physicians disagree with the classification of obesity as a disease. Therefore there are two perspectives and the organization had reasons that impelled them to classify obesity as a disease.
Obesity is mainly related to being overweight. People who are considered to have obesity have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. This is done by factoring in the weight and the height of the individual. It is caused by consumption of excess calories than the body requires. People who are obese take too much food than they require so the excess energy that is gotten from food is stored as fat in the body. When we look at it from this perspective obesity is not really a disease. Obese people are not suffering because they are overweight. The only problem they have is doing activities that require them to be active such as climbing up a flight of stairs. All people have to do is stop taking more food than they require. Hence from this perspective diabetes does not qualify as a disease.
