Children Should Never Be Educated at Home by Their Parents
Education is regarded as a process of learning, in which learners adopt, develop, and nurture positive behaviors from instructors, peers, and their environments. Children could miss a lot in the process of learning when taught at home, and should therefore, be never educated at home by their parents. Parents are not professional teachers, and learning at home locks children from diverse aspects of healthy competition, socialization, and psychological development with peers.
Parents are not professional and strict enough to ensure that children observe a strict timetable and follow timely schedules. Indeed, Hughes & Kwok (2007) were of the opinion that separating a learning from a home environment is key to enhanced attentiveness, psychological development, and adaptation of new behavior. Besides, parents usually have an ‘understanding’ attitude towards their children, making them too lenient to instill appropriate discipline in case of default. Besides, parents are likely to substitute ‘teaching’ with ‘taking care’ of children, thereby missing out the whole idea of home education.
Children taught at home largely miss the interaction aspect. According to Hughes & Kwok (2007), interaction provides children with healthy competition, and a sense of social relatedness, which is a key construct hypothesized in the contemporary theories of engagement, motivation, mental growth, and the entire learning process. Besides, children taught entirely at home "can become social outsiders who are uncomfortable mixing with other people in adult life" (Richards, Hull, & Proctor, p. 45).
