A president called Joan Coates governs the Australian Olympic committee. The current governance structure of the committee comprise of the president , vice, secretary general, chef de mission, the chair and deputy chair of the athlete's commission, C.E.O , a patron, and the seven other executive members
Objectives of the Australian Olympic committee
The Australian Olympic committee has several roles and objectives that it has to meet and the national sports goal. The committee is mandated to coordinate Olympic Games in Australia and manage the teams and players to participate in the Olympic Games. It selects the teams that performs best and takes the responsibility to support their financial needs. AOC is aimed at assisting the Olympians at all levels in their sporting activity and funds their travel to the Olympic Games competition. AOC cements a sport spirit and imparts the players with a positive mentality on the usefulness of Olympics. AOC has laid a strategic plan with objectives set and how to achieve these objectives. Among its objectives, is to set out a budget that assist it fund its mandate to financially assist the players. AOC in its objectives features the need to market the organization and strategize on the quality of personnel to employ (Smith and Stewart, 2010).
The committee upholds good morals and values and passes this to the athletes irrespective of their location, mythology or timing. The value aims at increasing new desires, respect and instills more team spirit. The Olympic Games gives Australia an opportunity to muscle in competition with superb counties such as Germany, New Zealand and the US. These games also enhance great friendships, partnerships, alliances and improve on the state of play of teams and organizations. AOC has revised its policies and more recently from the 2014 Sochi games. The poor tally of medals in the Sochi games has influenced the need to strategize on a new winning formula to help it have more medals (Green, 2007)
AOC set out its strategic direction which involves its mission, vision, and key performance indicators. The mission is to uphold values such as respect and encourage the youths to participate in the Olympic Games. The values will help improve the moral practices of athletes in Australia. It selects, send and finance athletes in the Olympic Games competition. It encourages participation in the competitions and improves team spirit for the athletes and the fans. It aims at being a world class Olympic Games organization that provides best support to athletes. The key indicator of the performance of the organization is the tally of medals that team athletes will be able to win (Smith and Stewart 2010).
Challenges of the Australian Olympic committee
The Australian Olympic committee faces challenges that are both internally and external. The governing bodies affiliated to the AOC and the members who include the player's faults the AOC mandate to coordinate Olympics effectively as compromised. The players currently have faulted the conduct of the Olympic committee due to improper management, poor appreciation and imbecility. Players, who participated in the skating during Olympics, blame their bosses and have lot of dislike for them. The Australian 2014 snowboarders have complained that the AOC limits their assistance to them. AOC do not provide the Olympians with financial support for their travel during competitions. The snowboarders have tagged themselves team out cast, due to the low appreciation by the country and the team they play in (Peters, 2014).
It faces family conflicts that arise from families that are dissatisfied by the way the committee handles its players. Bruce Bruckoff father to Belle Brockhoff links an offer that was previously made to Alex Pulin to be awarded a scholarship in case he won a medal at Sochi Olympics. Bruce and the team outcast want this support not to be given to only one but to all good athletes who win any medal. Belle's father claims that her daughter was ranked third during the world cup competitions in Austria in 2012 December and position nine in the 2012-2013. This is his basis of evidence to support the need for her daughter to get the scholarship (The Guardian, 2014).
In Ski & Snowboard Australia handbook certain criteria is set out in choosing winners who qualify for awards such as scholarships. The award is exceptional to those winners who shine in athletics and have gained recognition worldwide. Brockhoff raised this issue moments after belle completed her race. This angered the management of AOC and the OWIA (Olympic Winter Institute of Australia) as this statement he made was not timely. Belle's father claims of mental torture as he and her daughter expected much from the sport organization that was not to be. Belle was now a member of the team out cast who protested for unfair treatment by the sport organization. Australian Olympic committee is on spotlight for being an organization that does not put its member's interest at heart. It does not handle complaints well .and is adamant to take responsibilities and fulfill promises made (The Guardian, 2014).
Australia faces challenge as a country and its Olympic sports organization. The 2014 Sochi Olympic athletes disappointed the AOC by their poor performance. Australia Olympic committee had targeted to achieve gold medals and be among position 15 in the competitions. This was not a reality as it emerged 24 with no gold medal and a few medals the players had won. This dismal performance is a challenge, as the sport organization has to come up with new strategies to fix this problem (ABC news, 2014).
The committee has a hurdle in maintaining harmony, and discipline among teammates. It has to fight the hatred among them and cement a spirit of love. The athletes are unhappy and feel unsupported. Jacqui Cooper a five-time participant in winter Olympic Games criticizes Bright's' capability to win in the winter Olympic Games and emerge position 1. This shows existence of hatred and dislike among team members. This would adversely affect the performance of the team as a good interrelationship will boost morale of players and encourage one another not to give up. Australian Olympic committee is faced with such a situation that the people it manages do not set a good role model nor are they a winning team (News Limited Network, 2014).
Torah Bright observes that it is not about players asking for what is rightfully yours; parents meddle in their issue to gain from them. She uses the example of Belle's father who protests the unfair mistreatment by the Australian Olympic committee. She stresses on the need for finances from UK to assist the teams to facilitate players during competition and give them good remuneration. Ian Chesterman faults giving of much money to Pulin that resulted to his dismal performance in the Sochi games. He had received funds days before his race began. In all these allegations made against AOC, it becomes difficult for the Olympic committee proof beyond reasonable doubt that it is a clean and trustworthy organization. The committee faces many distractions that have made its state of play very low. There has been continued disunity in the committee brought about by dissatisfaction of players who boycott competitions. The committee required good leadership and proper management to help improve the state of play (The Guardian, 2014).
Australia was well represented during 2012 London games where several Australian swimmers showed their prowess. The Australian Olympic committee penalized six Australian competitors for using the sleeping drug, Stilnox, and also for ‘pranking' female team members. The AOC described the behavior as boorish, selfish and disrespectful that damaged morale. Two swimmers were fined 50% of their athlete support payments, and the other 4 were fined 25% of their athlete support payments. Additionally they will be suspended from the Rio Games and will have to pay the cost of the initial investigation amounting to $150,000, if they bring swimming into disrepute (smh.com.au, 2013).
The culture of the Olympic swimming team became toxic and had a destabilizing effect on many other athletes. Australia went without an individual gold in the pool since the 1976 Olympics, and lowest medal tally since Barcelona 1992 (Larkin and Clarke, 2013).
