What are the most critical factors described in the video regarding children?
Understanding Children with disabilities individual needs in an education setting should be necessary for educational professionals, practitioners, and evaluators. The video concerns the most critical factors like access, support, and participation, to determine whether a child needs a specific type of support. The children need to have access to materials and experiences to help them participate in any way that they are developmental. Additionally, professionals need to provide support as required to ensure that children have the opportunity to participate. Besides access, support, and participation, teachers collaborate with families to support the individual child's needs as described in Javier's case.
What are the points recommended before taking a child with disabilities into the formal education setting?
Several recommendations are discussed in this video to help identify the needs of children with disabilities and provide better advice to both parents and professionals before enrolling a child into the formal education setting. First, one should identify children's interests. Professionals need to have some background information on each child before entering into a formal education setting. Teachers need to engage child families through meeting to help in understanding their interests and goals. For instance, Javier's father says Javier has a lot of interest in games as he learns very fast and comfortably. Therefore speaking to the families and understanding a child's interests at home is crucial because it allows you to build on that interest and have a conversation about their needs at school.
Secondly, it is important to observe and assess children's strengths and needs. The Niloufar says the assessment is imperative in monitoring children with disabilities to provide appropriate intervention for them when they are very young to help identify their characteristics and assess their strengths and needs. For example, observing children throughout different parts of the day by taking anecdotal child records, photographs, samples, or work samples helps identify child patterns of strength, needs, and then adaptations that might be effective in decision making. Thirdly, it is imperative to verify observations with others (including all the team members working with the child) to help teachers collect as much information as possible.
Lastly, when collecting and filling children's individual plans every week, it is useful to use assessment to plan individualized strategies to identify each child's strengths during that particular day or week. Child strengths, therefore, might be expected to contribute to pluralistic, enriched, and non-reductive views of joining educational setting, and if not, what to help the child out.
What strategies did you see being used for integrating children with disabilities?
A central strategy in the video is that of a sense of peer interaction and belonging, which reflects the importance of participating, making friends, and working with other kids to integrate. For instance, Javier and his friend Dominic played together at the play-dough table. The materials (toys) used were open-ended enough, which allowed both children to engage in play together. However, the video reveals that Niloufar f
