Emotional Intelligence (EI) is an important characteristic of good leadership particularly in project management. It means working and relating to emotions in oneself and other people effectively (Coronado-Maldonado & Benítez-Márquez, 2023). To a project manager emotional intelligence can be a competitive advantage in team building, sustaining energy, and addressing project challenges. Self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills are the five major components of EI serving different functions in project success.
Most Important Element: Self-Regulation
Out of all the components of emotional intelligence, self-regulation is the most important to me as a project manager. Self-regulation is managing one's feelings, impulses, and responses, especially during stressful situations (El-Khatib et al., 2021). Project management involves time limitations, financial constraints, and conflicts in a project team. If a project manager tends to lose his or her temper or act on impulse, then it is very likely to destroy the morale and trust of the team hence affecting the project negatively.
Ability to remain calm, make coherent decisions, and communicate effectively even when under stress indicates professionalism. Controlling my emotions can help me deal with emergent situations better, keep my team members productive, and solve interpersonal conflicts without increasing tensions (Harahap et al., 2023). In other words, self-regulation improves a leader’s ability to reason and make rational decisions which is a key factor in managing the ambiguity that will occur during a project.
Least Important Element: Motivation
Although all elements of emotional intelligence are essential to some extent I consider motivation as the least significant factor within the project management framework. Motivation is the desire an individual has or the plan to succeed in a process and improve continuously (Rehman et al., 2020). Being motivated and committed to project success as a Project Manager is quite essential, but this may not be very vital in managing the social relations and day-to-day dynamics and decisions among the team members.
Project managers are often more externally driven by project objectives and deadlines and products to be delivered at different phases of the projects. Specifically, skill-based roles, like project management may incorporate motivation as a factor that is somewhat less significant than others including self -regulation because in most cases these roles depend more on accurately defined deliverables as compared to inspiration towards certain goals. My responsibility as a project manager is to motivate and inspire the motivation of their team rather than focusing on self-motivation (Harahap et al., 2023).
Conclusion
In conclusion, emotional intelligence is crucial...
