Why a Theme is Important
A theme is a leading thought or a combining idea. It is the central notion behind a story (John McCord, 1996). A theme is the discreet part which starts with a concept that develops influenced by the writer’s philosophy or a certain observation of the human condition or problem. The theme functions as the diffident but essential ingredient to make a story meaningful. A well-organized theme connects the artist/ writer to their audience, it is the driving intention your work as this is the message you are trying to communicate across to an audience and when appropriately communicated, the audience is emotionally and logically content. This way it is much easier to comprehend what a writer is saying and act accordingly. As many people confuse a theme and a plot, the theme is what guides that plot, the characters, the action, the dialogue and the subplots thus very vital.
Every theme must exhibit some truth in it. Most literature works contain an implied general message about our lives and the world at large. Stories that have unbelievable or unrealistic statements about human nature are not convincing thus the need to review a certain theme properly in relation to the real issues facing the current world (John McCord, 1996). This way people reading your work can relate to your story and use it as an inspiration to better their lives or even help them solve a major issue affecting their day to day activities.
