While shadowing an osteopathic physician for 56 hours, I gained meaningful experience in osteopathic medicine. From the physician, I learned how to write a SOAP note and record data. In the process, I looked up to, admired, and trusted the doctor to be my role model. From the different patients I interacted with, I acknowledged the different ways of approaching, adjusting, and dealing with each personality. Compassion, respect, and empathy could be evident from the physician during his diagnosis and treatment, which taught me how to remain in perspective. As well, the choice treatment for each patient I realized must be of their best interest. From such professional guidance and encouragement, I acquired invaluable insight into osteopathic medicine with the physician became my source of inspiration. I am convinced that the osteopathic field is a passionate area of medicine that will give the opportunity of a long-term commitment to quality of care, effective healing, and alleviation of patient’s condition through holistic approaches. Besides, I recognized a significant part of healing focuses on the patient as a whole; that is, body, mind, and spirit. Also, by receiving a recommendation letter from the physician, I am grateful it will assist in my application for osteopathic medical schools.
