Aging is an inevitable part of life which tends to bring up a number of challenges. The aged try to cope up with these challenges in different ways. Three theories suggest the different ways in which older people tend to deal with such challenges. The proposed theories are the activity theory, the continuity theory and the disengagement theory.
The activity theory is the best lifestyle for any individual who is undergoing aging. There is a link between activity and happiness of the aged as the theory proposes. Elderly people generally tend to be happier when they are more active and engaged in social activities (Crosnoe et.al, 2002). Therefore, it is recommended that the aged engage in activity since this boosts their well-being. The major drawback of this theory is the uneven distribution of social engagements and other activities. In addition, some may not find delight in social interactions and engaging in activities.
