A comparison of Florida and Maryland Boards of Nursing regulation for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) demonstrates significant similarities and certain differences in the way each of the BONs function. The Maryland Board of Nursing is the body empowered through the Maryland Nurse Practice Act to regulate the work of APRNs in the State (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2020). In Florida, the Florida Board of Nursing, empowered by the Florida Nurse Practice Act, represents the state in regulating APRNs (Florida Board of Nursing, 2016). Some fundamental differences that exist between them include the fact that the prescriptive authority of the APRN is not complete and the APRN requires supervision of a physician or a surgeon. Furthermore, they must have proof of malpractice insurance or an exemption from such insurance before they are allowed to operate (Florida Board of Nursing, 2016). On the other hand, in Maryland, the APRN has full authority once they get the APRN license to practice (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2020). However, due to an opioid crisis in the state, nurse practitioners must register with the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) to establish a significant measure of monitoring of their activities. The established understanding is that these differences make nurses in Maryland more flexible in handling various issues compared to nurses in Florida (Maryland Board of Nursing, 2020).
