Instructions:

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner construction project began in earnest in the early 2000’s, with an initial completion date around 2008. However, the project was rife with problems, delays, issues, and mistakes related to logistics and planning. Use the Hunt Library to research related articles. Study the articles and complete a case study analysis. Begin with a summary overview outlining the main logistics issues facing Boeing as the Dreamliner project progressed. Then, add detail and analysis by responding to the following topics and questions.
Assess the extent to which Boeing used modern technology to help control and manage the 787 project. Justify your answer with an appropriate example or illustration, and cite a reliable source to support your comments.
Describe any quality methods used by Boeing during the 787 project. Evaluate the effectiveness of those methods if used.
Identify the most valuable logistics lessons learned from the Boeing 787 construction experience, and suggest ways for present logistics managers to avoid making similar errors. Comment on why such management errors are made considering that best practices have been taught about logistics and project management for several decades. In the contemporary world, aircraft manufacturers are striving towards profitability and sustainability. In 2004, Boeing began developing the 787 aircraft family aimed at improving traveling experiences for passengers and reducing fuel costs and noise levels as a strategic move to compete with Airbus' 380 (Shenhar, Holzmann, Melamed & Zhao, 2016). During the process, the company embraced outsourcing as a means to reduce the development time. Denning (2013) indicates that the approach was intended to minimize the development time from six to four years and costs from $10 billion to $6 billion. However, the project outcome was the opposite, as the costs exceeded the initial estimated ones, and the project was three years behind schedule (Denning, 2013). The supply chain was implemented in a manner that allowed a complicated array of conglomerates to share risks and profits of the project. The changes resulted in increased financial burdens and delayed product output, as each company operates to protect its interests. Consequently, the new changes in supply chain and assembly processes were adopted too soon based on executives underestimating the scale and risks involved. Because companies are striving towards sustainability and profitability, logistic considerations must be made before implementing global supply chains.
