Alan Ayckbourn theater art Relatively speaking is a piece of writing and play that involves two different couples that are experiencing completely different marital and relationships problems. Though it revolves around common relationship problems its comic side makes it more popular among the audience. The Ayckbourn script clearly exhibits ally the dynamics of what a successful play involves and the ingredients of making it fascinating and iconic.
Greg and Ginny is the first couple involved in relationship upheavals as their relationship has not lasted for more than a month. Ginny is the female who is more experienced on marital relationships than her naïve partner Greg. She tells her partner that she has plans to go out and visit her parents when her real plan is to end their relationship that has not been working for a while. Greg decides that he must follow his wife to be and go out to meet her in-laws. What makes this play more interesting for the audience is the way it has been plotted as Greg arrives earlier than Ginny not realizing that the home he was in was not of her in laws but for his wife former lover named Philip. The comic side of the play is how Ayckbourn has used mistaken identity where Gregg believes Philip and Sheila to be her parents in law while Philip believes Gregg to be the admirer of his wife Sheila. Philip acknowledges that his wife has an admirer man who he thinks to be Gregg who has just visited their home. During this confusion, comic experiences and a lot of laughing is experienced among the anxious audience watching the play. During this experience Gregg has an opportunity to ask for marriage blessings from his supposedly father in law not knowing that this was the man who was the lover of her beloved Ginny.
Max Bennett playing the role of Gregg seems to be a talented comic actor as he fits into the role of an innocent, naïve and noble man who has no experience of being in a relationship. His wife Ginny, Kara Tointon a clear and vivid representation of decayed morals of women in the 18th century who has been married by a faithful and loving man.
