source..Foroud, T., H. J. Edenberg and J. C. Crabbe. "Genetic research: who is at risk for alcoholism." "Alcohol Research & Health" (2010): 64-75. Print.
The study provides a systematic review of extant findings derived from adoption, twin and family studies on alcohol dependency. In this regard, the study sought to investigate the biological influences of alcohol dependence by evaluating the role of genetic factors. The researchers critically analyzed linkage and case-control studies to highlight DNA variants likely to increase the risk of developing alcoholism. Furthermore, evidenced derived from studies conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) highlighted the importance of identifying the causative genes using advanced technologies.
The findings of the study demonstrated that there are several genes that can predispose an individual to become an alcoholic. However, advanced technologies are essential to identify the genes likely to trigger early onset of alcoholism. Furthermore, the study also highlighted neurotransmitter receptors and alcohol-metabolizing enzymes as variants likely to contribute to early onset of alcoholism. These findings infer that genetics rather than environmental factors contribute to early onset of alcoholism.
