The debate about Medicare for All has been going on for a long time and the issues that the newly proposed bill is supposed to address seem to have been forgotten. The business of medicine which is run by large, publicly traded corporations which are dedicated to maximizing profitability has for a long time hindered the establishment of a guaranteed Healthcare for all program Arno, (2022). Health care programs should not be dependent on the commercialized model of business used today and the over-reliance on the tools of capitalism like competition, marketing and consumer choice in order to increase public access to quality medical care.
Further, excessive focus on health care as a business has brought destructive consequences on both the patients and medical care givers causing difficulties for many patients in accessing affordable and quality care. The profit motive of most corporations has eroded the functions of major primary care givers leading to a decrease in the number of primary care givers. The corporate structure has influenced the provision of medical care to almost dominating the relationship between doctors and patients. Professional ethics allows the doctor to put the patient first. According to Arno, (2022) the corporatization of medical care has had the greatest impact on the healthcare system making it hard for the development of a rational, humane and efficient national health care policy.
The argument for Medicare for All is very powerful and attractive but the means of achieving a universal health care system seems to be problematic and unrealistic. Critics of the idea of Medical care for all argue that it is basically about reducing the costs of health and increasing government spending on health.
