Introduction
Altruism is a principle that concerns the welfare of others. It is considered as both traditional and modern virtue according to modern American culture and as a core aspect in embracing various religious traditions (Crockett, 2005). Traditionally, altruism has ever been considered as the standard for moral behavior, and those who intended to deviate from altruism would be regarded as selfish or greedy (Dumenil, 2014). To justify whether altruism is still a traditional virtue in modern American culture, have then organized my work to entirely address the relationship between the traditional view on altruism and the modern American see and how its applications on modern American culture promotes their culture and behavior.
Altruism is a particular moral obligation. It does not necessarily demand a person to serve others but through an agreement, willingness and kindness of the individual. Traditionally, altruism was practiced through different ways to uphold American culture and behavior (Ehrenreich, 2014). The relationship between the traditional and modern American ways of expressing altruism is common. For instance, traditional medicine, men, and mid wives were actively responsible for ensuring the well-being of the sick and the expectant mothers (Crockett, 2005). Through their commitments for the task, they expressed altruism since they had to be kind and selfless. In modern set up, doctors and nurses have taken the responsibility. The work of nurses and physicians require altruism. A doctor must be selfless and kinds enough to enable him to handle patients with a lot of care.
If an act is performed for any reason beyond advancing the well-being of the person then it should not be morally justified but also applauded (Ehrenreich, 2014). Instead one should begin by asking some questions to explain the moral. For instance, the questions should seek to address the consequences by asking how many people generous or benevolent or charitable criteria meets the person’s moral for being altruistic (Kropp, 2006). When doing good things for others makes someone happy then there should be a reward for their deeds for the people
Although according to emerging research on altruism and how it affects culture shows that evil behavior has a genetic basis, this paper then seeks to address how there can be a significant biological basis for moral actions (Jeffries at el., 2006). It is also argued that the pathological altruism is a representation of behaviors that deviate from the norms which are set aside to define limits of the altruistic act (Crockett, 2005).
In the modern set up, altruism is still an important virtue in securing American culture and behavior in general. Altruism focuses on bringing people of different kinds together hence promotes peace and unity amongst the people (Haidt & Joseph, 2007). Charitable organizations across the world are focused on ensuring that altruism is well and properly embraced by providing aid to other countries to assist them to overcome different challenges like drought, flood, and famine (Kropp, 2006).
