Leaders and Networks
Ibarra.H., & Hunter, M. (2008). “How leaders create and use networks.” Harvard Business
Review, Winter, 106-112.
“How leaders create and use networks” is an article appearing in the Winter, 2008 issue of the Harvard Business Review. The article was authored by Herminia Ibarra and Mark Hunter. The authors explain how leaders create and use networks. The article argues that even though most leaders dread and underrate networks, they sooner learn that it is one of the most important imperatives of leadership. The article further argues that network creation is one of the most self-evident and one of the most dreaded developmental challenges that aspiring leaders must address. The article uses cited case studies to show the dangers of lack of networks in a leader and to explain the three forms of networking which are:operational, personal, and strategic. The article explains the purpose of each level of networking, the location and temporal orientation, players and recruitment, and network attributes and key behaviors. The article argues that the three levels of network are not mutually exclusive and managers/leaders are obligated to create these networks. All that leaders need to do is developing their mindsets towards networking and have role models and that effective and ethical networking is a matter of judgment and intuition.
