Articulating the Tentative Research Topic, Problem, Purpose and Questions (Essay Sample)

WORKSHEET 2: ARTICULATING THE TENTATIVE RESEARCH TOPIC, PROBLEM, PURPOSE AND QUESTIONS
After reviewing and finding a gap in the literature, I propose the following study:
1 Research topic: (What general educational or social issue, controversy or concern do I want to study?
I am inclined to pursue on how to address the need for students to be critical thinker and media literate in this Neo-normal period of education, where critical reading is considered archaic and media literacy is a trendy buzzword that has yet to be digested.
2 Research problem: (What is the existing situation, policy or practice? What is the problem in this existing situation, policy or practice? What gap was I able to discover in the literature?
Lack of ability to interpret media messages and texts in terms of thought components such as point of view, assumption, inference, conclusion, etc., and standards such as clarity, accuracy, and precision, etc., as well as the necessity of integrating media literacy and critical literacy into any curriculum without being linked to or dependent on the content of any course, is a significant omission I see in the current practice. Currently, students fail to overcome challenges on varying perspectives, disinformation, prejudice, and critical thinking on discourses encountered daily in all types of media from formal and informal setting. This has an effect on Filipinos' literacy and numeracy. In the absence of holistic development of critical thinking and media literacy, the reading and numeracy abilities of Filipino students will erode, considering the flexible learning modalities schools are adapting, and all facts will just drown as unresolved numbers in perpetuity. All of these are holes that I hope to fill with my research.
