Commentary
The macro skills are the foundation of literacy skills. Without holistic development of macro skills, literacy skills will be affected. The macro skills are the fundamentals that we need to learn a language. Literacy skills are essential In learning. Thus, language and literacy are dichotomous. Every literacy skill has its counterpart in language skills. The receptive skills of reading and listening complement the receptive literacies, while the expressive literacies complete speaking and writing. Their connection is seamless because an oral deficit, for example, affects reading or speaking. Poor vocabulary affects speaking and reading, too. Oral language needs syntax while reading, and vocabulary makes the semantics of the language. Indeed, the best way to improve students' literacy is through reading, which will allow students to strengthen their macro skills and the literacies when reading alone. Therefore, literacy is a cognitive skill.
