Commercial #1 shows a celebrity, Matthew McConaughey endorsing a Lincoln MKC. This commercial is associated with the fallacy of false authority or appeal to authority. This is because the commercial hinges on a celebrity giving credibility to their product without describing any of its features as it should. Since celebrities have a hold over people the Lincoln Company taps into this to advertise their new car model. Commercial #2 shows Dish Network discredit other cable TV networks by referring to them as pigs. This is associated with the fallacy of Ad Hominem. Instead of them presenting their argument they launch a personal attack with insults towards the other cable companies to distract the audience from the main issue.
Commercial #3 shows a man go out on vacation to get away from his cable TV that went out only to end up being a local fisherman. This represents the fallacy of slippery slope in that the action of using cable TV will somehow lead to being a local fisherman called ‘Big Fatty Face’. The fallacy being used here is effective because it highlights the rivals’ main weakness, that cable TV can get disconnected if unpaid. I think Direct TV employed this fallacy to discredit their rivals and present their company as the better choice.
