The diagnostic tests that can be used to reveal the type and cause of Mr. O infections are physical examinations of chronic sinusitis, acute sinusitis, otitis media, reflectometry, and tympanometry. In acute sinusitis, the physician looks for swelling and redness of nasal passages, purulent drainage, tenderness to percussion on the forehead, and swelling on the cheeks and around the eyes. Examiners determine chronic sinusitis by using X-rays, imaging studies, and sinus culture (Kivi & Yu, 2018). Tympanometry assesses the pressure in ears while reflectometry measures the fluids.
The probable conditions making Mr. O produce yellow-green mucus, sore throat, pain around the eyes, and fever are sinusitis that developed in the upper respiratory infection. Otitis media, an ear infection, is responsible for the pain in his right ear. If diagnostic tests show the presence of staphylococci, the bacteria is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
The probable course of treatment for sinusitis is drinking more fluids, breathe warm and moist air, avoid cold air, put clove oil in the ear canal, washing nasal with salt water, and quit smoking and alcohol. For otitis media, Mr. O should use paracetamol to manage the pain. However, he should not use antibiotics since they can have adverse effects (Wald & DeMuri, 2013). The common medications used are corticosteroids, analgesics, and decongestants.
Some of the problems that might arise from the use of antimicrobial drugs are drug allergies, opportunistic infections, and antibiotic resistance. Opportunistic infections are caused by pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses that make take an advantage of the weakened immune system. Drug allergies might occur when some medications are incompatible with the user and might cause other unexpected health problems (McIntosh, 2018). Furthermore, antibiotic resistance occurs when microorganisms mutate or change when they become exposed to antimicrobial drugs. In the long run, they develop resistance that makes it hard to get rid of them.
