Causes of Teenage Pregnancy
This is a pregnancy in a girl aged 19 and below. It occurs when teen girls have unprotected sexual intercourse with a man after having begun regular menstrual periods. Every year, an estimated 21 million girls aged 15–19 years in developing regions become pregnant and approximately 12 million of them give birth.1 At least 777,000 births occur to adolescent girls younger than 15 years in developing countries (WHO, 2020). Teen pregnancy causes complications for the teen mother and baby, resulting in the death of either the mother or baby (Xavier & Brown, 2018). Therefore, complications during teenage pregnancies have been proven to be the leading cause of death in teen mothers.
The causes of teenage pregnancy include curiosity about sex, whereby they do experiments and end up getting pregnant, family-related problems like lack of finance in which they may have sex in exchange for money, sexual abuse like rape, media influence, and peer pressure whereby they see being pregnant as a common thing and whenever they see fellow teens who are pregnant, they also decide to become pregnant. Teen girls get carried away very quickly by friends and thus make decisions that will later cause these teenage pregnancies (Maravilla et al., 2017). Furthermore, neglect by parents influences early pregnancy because the teens will lack knowledge on how to avoid pregnancy, cultural beliefs whereby early marriage is supported, lack of community responsibilities whereby the teen’s girls are no longer taught about sex education, substance abuse which make them unconscious and end up either being raped or willingly engaging in unprotected sex, they are unconscious and have low use of contraceptives (Donkor & Lariba, 2017).In conclusion, providing teenagers with knowledge about sex can prevent teenage pregnancy.
