Changing Our Lives
The decision to join college is not one that came to me as a surprise. Throughout my childhood and upbringing, the significance of education and the role it plays in the welfares of our futures was always emphasized. To be honest, I am even more surprised at the fact that the time for me to join college has finally arrived after decades of impatient waiting than I am of actually getting in. This desire to excel in life cultivated yet another desire inside of me that prompted me to explore all viable means of securing a successful future. Furthermore, college had always been described by the media and all the other older individuals I interacted with as a place where one gets exposure to various opportunities which at the time were most appealing to me.
One obvious reason that informed my decision was the yearning for a financially stable future or career. In as much as this is often perceived as the main reason people go to school in the first place, it has recently been found to be the misconception that has fatally constrained our abilities to expand the horizons of our visions. I believe academic endowment is just one of the many things that contribute in one way or another to an economically stable future; it is however not the only one. I have seen several people who get disappointed when they realize that going to college does not necessarily guarantee the desirable life they were promised and in that I am prepared to surf whatever waves that the academic tides shall bring my way.
I have also come to college to become a better member of the society. The notion that education is power is an incontestable fact, and one that is discernable from comparing illiterate or semi-illiterate societies with literate ones. I believe attending college will provide me with the necessary skill set and experience to enable me fit perfectly into the society. Our characters are influenced and shaped significantly by the environments we are raised in as well as the individuals we interact with. Considering the fact that college is an intellectual institution, I hope to interact with intellectual members of the society so that they may influence my character.
