In the recent past, communication and public relations professionals are increasingly recognizing the importance of a strong internal communication strategy in an organization. A plethora of studies have documented the important role that internal communication plays in shaping the direction of the company. Traditionally, communication involves a two-way process of information exchange. Like any other form of communication, internal communication involves the manner in which communication takes place in an organization. According to Quirke (2008) internal communication refers to the process of communication that takes place between managers and the employees. Internal communication has been shown to influence performance and commitment since it motivates employees to trust and commit themselves in their roles. Imperatively, internal communication has been shown to enhance important bottom line outcomes such as productivity and profitability. In addition, internal communication is critical for promoting a culture of transparent, enhancing the implementation of change, and promoting engagement among employees in the organization. Since internal communication is considered as a critical tenet in contemporary organization, this study explores contemporary literatures on the subject to identify the importance of internal communication in organizational settings.
