“Courageous” (2011)
Courageous (2011) is a pro-life action movie featuring five fathers who show a determination to be better fathers. The 2011 film is set in Albany, Georgia with four sheriffs as the central characters. They all are in different levels of fatherhood and the main protagonist, Adam, like the rest represents a majority of fathers who spend a lot of time away from their children mainly on work commitments. The fifth character is a man Adam hires to help with some repairs. Adam, like many fathers walks the path of not knowing how well to relate with his children and family. However, a tragic event changes the course of his life and jolts the rest to reality. This takes a spiritual phase in his life, which forces him to re-evaluate and re-focus his life’s direction and take up full responsibility as both a man and a father.
Various ethical lessons abound that a nurse can borrow from the movie and apply in his or her career and life development.
First, as the title ‘Courageous’ implies, the five fathers in the movie are made to muster the courage required of them to appropriately face the deficient factors in their families which is their absence from their role as fathers. In a society characterized by divorce and absentee fatherhood, the decision of the five men to face their failures is an act of courage. Similarly, as a nurse, making a decision to face what has been lacking in my career or taking up more responsibility for my work forms part of the ethical dimension in career terms to be acquired from the movie ‘Courageous’.
Secondly, it is a lesson on personal ethics. The officers in the movie are certified as some of the best in the force and they clearly dedicate their best of talents and skills on the job. However, when it comes to their dedication to their families at home, a gaping absence is evident. When a child of one of the law enforcers dies, is when they realize that they have to play an essential part to their families, as well. Ethically speaking there should be a balance between career and family. As a nurse, I am challenged to find this balance as well for without it one part of me is bound to suffer and eventually the other.
Another good lesson to draw from the movie regards professional ethics. While the officers are indeed good at getting their work done, they also reflect what a large number of professionals do which is commit professional negligence. For instance, they receive personal calls while in the course of duty. As an ethical error to note, it reminds me as a nurse of the same ethical issue I may have either committed myself or witnessed my colleagues do by attending to personal matters while in the course of duty.
On the same vein, another ethical concern that crops up in the movie is placing the people you serve first. As ...
