Sex offenders
A sex offenders are persons who have been found guilty, in a court of law, of a sexual crime. Most sex offenders will be convicted of crimes of a sexual nature though some of them will be convicted of violations that are in a sexual category. Some serious crimes committed by sex offenders include sexual imposition, rape, female genital mutilation, child sex abuse, and statutory rape. In a state like Minnesota, the percentage of sex offenders in prison is 29%. These prisoners suffer from social isolation and harassment (Mann, 2016).
History of Laws
Sex crimes have been punished harshly for a long time in society. Reasonably then, the federal law was not the first legislation to proposer the registration of sex offenders. In fact, California had a legislation that demanded the registration of all sex offenders. In the recent past, there have been frightening occurrences that have made legislation stringent in the cases of sex crimes. For this reason, the federal law was passed in May of 1996, referred to as Megan’s Law. The term refers to the federal law and sometimes, the affiliated state laws in the United States that require the mandatory registration of individuals with sex crimes. The law enforcement authorities in the US then make the information available to the public (Levenson & Cotter, 2005).
