In various literal works, there always exist various characters that bring along complicated performances. The characters end up as heroes and heroines while others don’t. In Aphra Behn’s work The Lucky Chance, Lady Julia Fulbank comes out as the most complicated dramatic heroine. The complexity of her character is defined and described in various ways. It also relates to her significance as a representation of femininity during the entire period (Behn, 1687).
There are various ways Lady Julia Fulbank portrays the character of being the most complicated dramatic heroine. First, Julia, being a young wife to Sir Cautious Fulbank, tries an assignation with her former lover, Gayman, and ends up in bed with him. It occurred after Gayman won a night with Julia at the cards. However, in the end, Sir Cautious asked Gayman to take Julia after he dies. In this case, the young Julia had triumphed over the old. She is thus witty and full of mind games. She is always the winner at the end, where she rejects Gayman, who is just after having sex with her. She scolds him off, claiming that she is not a prostitute (Behn, 1687).
Second, she toils against the implications of rape in society. Lady Fulbank rejects the protections of marriage socially, especially after suffering the assault. She is a person who stands apart or away from erotic fulfillment and marriage so that she defends her autonomy. Lady Fulbank, however, retains her status as a wife hence making it possible for her to remain economically and socially stable. These bring out the heroine in her. On the other hand, drama ensues when she chooses to deny her lover and her husband (Behn, 1687).
Third, Lady Fulbank is a dramatic lady because she chooses not to take marriage as a guarantee of having peaceful unification. Additionally, she also doesn’t see marriage as a solution to the complex world where men seem to be very abusive. They manipulate, control, and deceive women. She is a person who chooses to struggle against husbands and lovers for respect (Behn, 1687).
Also, Lady Julia Fulbank is neither willing to betray her husband nor give up her amour with Gayman. In the literal work, she is intelligent, able, and capable of managing both the relationships on her terms. She is not willing to neither be a passive housewife nor be a silly flibbertigibbet who can be easily taken by libertines who talk smoothly and in search of an easy conquest. In light of this, she becomes dominant in relationships, relegating and emasculating the men to the more submissive roles. She thus chooses to use various tactics to have control over her husband and her lover (Behn, 1687).
Julia employs a very different relationship with her husband, Sir Cautious, as compared with the romantic liaison she has with Gayman. She is very frank with her husband, where she offers plain truth and clean dealings. However, she is very flirtatious and coy to her lover. This makes it possible for her to stay with her old husband, whom she only married for financial freedom. This is, however, not the case with her love, Gayman, who is poor and after sexual satisfaction from Julia (Behn, 1687).
