Constructive conflict is defined as the conflict that benefits exceed the costs; it creates productive, shared decisions, mutually beneficial. The process in the construction conflict develops as important as the end result. However, at this stage, people converge to strengthen their relationship for their advantage. Constructive conflict communication, often generates a positive and a supportive climate that intensify the possibility of resolving without harming the relationship.
In contrast, unproductive conflict flows from narrowly rigid goals and frequently it produces negative results. It results as are repetitive argument that are not resolved and eventually leave both parties while feeling frustrated. An individual who may always be involve become less flexible while assuming that the opposing party suffers the defeat. The parties succumb to personal threat, attacks and hostility.
Constructive conflict is where all parties can win, and the goals of both involved parties are flexible. Once both the parties locate the common link between them, they begin the process of reaching a mutual decision. Collectively, it occurs when the parties acknowledge the need to compromise and are happy with their level of disagreement. Constructive conflict relies on shared willingness and the flow of communication to embrace the change. Unproductive conflict usually ignores the real issues between the conflicting parties.
Often, the party remains determined to win on the issue of a particular interests and at this situation the power struggle is to be blamed. Poor conflict management skills bound progressive interaction and therefore contributes to destructive conflict. Destructive conflict primarily originates from hopelessness and inadequacy.
Unproductive conflict often contributes to fear, cycle of anger and isolation between groups and individuals. When this conflict occurs, mostly people involved feel a number of emotions, e.g., resentment rejection and shame. Compared to constructive conflict that has many positive benefits, e.g. feeling of wellbeing and the security. Frequently, when it occurs people adapt better to conflict situations and make it more effective towards resolution this was referred from "Strategic Communication in Business and the Professions" by Dan O'Hair.
