Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects many people in the world today. PTSD is a mental disorder that involves trauma after certain experiences in a person’s life. Examples of such trauma can be from threats of death, death, certain injuries or even sexual violence among others. The trauma it causes often affects the individuals suffering from PTSD in that they develop a lot distress and become too frightened. Trauma often happens unexpectedly and thus it is difficult to treat. A person who suffers from PTSD can experience a reoccurrence of trauma thus leading to him/ her developing distress. People who suffer from PTSD usually develop fear about the experiences that traumatize them hence never want to be reminded of such experiences. PTSD thus can cause a change in mood of the victim due to the thoughts of certain events.
PTSD affects many people in the world today. Most people who experience trauma in their lives are often victims of PTSD. Trauma often makes individuals to develop fear and thus never want to think about the experiences that caused the trauma. PTSD affects anyone who has been a long victim of trauma. When a patient’s trauma lasts, he/she has a high chance of developing PTSD. The length of a person’s trauma can depend on several factors. One of these factors is the way the patient was handled while suffering from the trauma. In a situation where the trauma was not properly handled, it is likely to reoccur (Wilson, Friedman & Lindy, 2001). A reoccurrence of trauma makes the victims have a high chance of developing PTSD. The type of jobs people do may also lead to trauma and thus the development of PTSD. Military personnel, doctors, first responders, and nurses have a higher chance of developing PTSD than people who perform other jobs. The jobs expose the individuals to certain scenes that may affect them in future and thus making them have a high chance of developing trauma. The victims usually think about the experiences such that they are stressed. Some of the victims often develop fear of the experiences they had. They then develop distress hence are traumatized. The victims can also experience mood and though changes depending on the event causing them trauma. The uncontrollable thoughts can also lead to over-anxiety among the victims.
The number of people affected by PTSD rises over the years. Different people are often exposed to certain traumatizing events that reoccur in their thoughts. An example of the people affected is those that experience terrorist attacks. Most of the people who experience terrorist attacks usually develop trauma and if not properly handled can lead to PTSD. Recent terrorist attacks in several countries have led to an increase in PTSD victims in such countries. Most of the people who experience certain accidents are usually victims of PTSD. It is clear that different accidents and life-threatening activities happen in countries all over the world. Most of the people who experience such activities and accidents are victims of trauma and if not managed well can develop PTSD. The individuals who experience the deaths often develop a fear for death and hence have several thoughts about it. A reoccurrence of these thoughts then make the individuals scared and worried. It is clear that an individual’s social life plays a role in handling the experiences they face in life such as certain deaths, accidents or scary scenes (Krieger & Sullivan, 2001).
PTSD can affect anybody regardless of social or economic status. Age is also not a factor in those affected by PTSD since even children can be victims. Any person who may have experiences a certain traumatizing event in his/ her life can become a victim of PTSD if not handled properly. Such people often develop thoughts about certain events or experiences in their life (England, 2009). The victims usually appear to live a lonely life as they often have several thoughts of the experiences. The environment usually affects the
