The Department Of Treasury has confirmed that the United States will incur all costs in the construction of a wall along its southern border with Mexico. Currently, there are ongoing debates and intense lobbying on the economic ramifications of the proposed border wall. According to US Department of Homeland Security, the construction of the border wall will cost an estimated amount of $ 70 billion and an annual maintenance cost of $ 150 million. Both security experts and the economists have questioned the long-term importance of building the wall at the expense of vital services experiencing a budgetary deficit in the US annual budget. Since the US taxpayers will incur the cost of using the wall, it is necessary to examine the long-term economic implications of the project against the improvement of critical services in the United States.
Regardless of the opposition that progressives, liberals, and economists have expressed against the proposed border wall, the controversial debate spilled into the floor of the US Congress, with the opposing factions engaging in the bitter expression for both the support and opposition of the proposed building of the border wall. One faction is of the view that the public funding to accomplish the construction of the border wall will be a long-lasting solution to the security loopholes responsible for the illegal immigration, money laundering, drug smuggling, and human trafficking in the southern border. On the contrary, ardent opponents of the project are of the opinion that the public will incur the high cost of building a border wall that taints the image if the US as a discriminative and advancing an isolationist agenda (Barnett 235).
