Caffeine is a substance obtained from plants. It is consumed all over the world, and has a rich history of usage and consumption. It is found in beverages, common foods and even medicines. In this paper, I will explore the effects of caffeine on intellective functions and whether it can be considered as an enhancer or otherwise harmful to the health of individuals.
Caffeine has more positive effects on our bodies than it harms. When consumed in low or moderate amounts, it reduces the reaction time and improves concentration and vigilance of an individual (Santos et al., 2014). It also improves sports performance. For example, while investigating the effect of caffeine on the reaction time of athletes, 10 taekwondo artists consumed 5 mg·kg−1 body mass caffeine and then engaged in two combats at an interval of 20 minutes. A test on their reaction time was done just before and after the combats. The results showed that individual reaction time had improved by a margin of 0.08s. before the first combat (Santos et al., 2014). Therefore, regular intake of caffeine can help cognitive functions in individuals.
